    Skills Lab Internship Placement Program

    The Horn Review Skills lab works with various institutional partners in both the public and private sectors to facilitate an on-the-job training program for graduating seniors and recent graduates from public Universities in Ethiopia. The placement program is intended to supplement the academic training through internship posts in research analysis, data entry and mapping, communications, and marketing, grant writing, and similar themes in the humanities fields.

      Team - Getachew Nigatu

      About Horn Review

      Our Team

      Getachew Nigatu

      Founder, Partnerships Manager

      Getachew is Manager of Partnerships and Outreach at Horn Review. As founder, he oversees Horn Review’s various initiatives with local partners.

      Getachew obtained his first degree from Addis Ababa University’s Political Science and International Relations department and holds an M.A. in International Relations from Addis Ababa University and an M.A. from the University of Leeds, UK, in Political Communication. Getchew also works as a training coordinator with Institute for Security Studies. He has over 18 years of experience in media, diplomacy, and international relations.

      Prior to his role at Horn Review, Getachew served as Director General at the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and worked as Secretariat for the Foreign Policy Review Team. Upon Joining the private sector, Getachew worked as a senior political editor at The Reporter Newspaper in Ethiopia.



      Team - Messay Gebre Mariam

      Messay Gebre Mariam

      Research Manager

      Dr. Messay is an Associate Professor of Social Work and Social Development, and the former Director for the Office of HIV Prevention and Control at Addis Ababa University (AAU). He is a member of the advisory council for the HIV Care and Treatment (HiCT-CDS) Project at AAU and has more than 13 years of experience in research, teaching, and community service organizing throughout Ethiopia.

      Dr. Messay works as a Research Manager with Horn Review and directs various qualitative and quantitative research projects in the team.

      He is also a Research Associate at the University of Johannesburg. He has worked for the University of Illinois in Chicago, USA, and Institute of Social Work in Tanzania as a trainer and for Drexel and Boston Universities, the USA as a research consultant. He was awarded the Civil Society Scholar Award on 2018-19 at the School of Social Work, at Indiana University in the United States. His primary research area relates to elder care and well-being.

      Lidya Tekalign

      Design Associate

      Lidya graduated from Unity University with a major in Architectural Design and a minor in urban planning. Her undergraduate academic focus has been sustainable urban development and human centered design solutions.

      Prior to her role as a graphic design associate at Horn Review, Lidya worked as graphic design and project associate at the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) in supporting the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia in Ethiopia’s 6th General Elections.

      Her career interests include corporate branding, publication design and policy studies with focus on environmental and urban development policies.



      Team - Tinbite Elias

      Tinbite Elias

      Editorial Associate

      Tinbite Elias graduated from the University of Redlands with majors in International Relations and Public Policy, as well as a minor in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Her undergraduate academic focus has been United States foreign policy via-a-vis the Middle East particularly historical and political context of state-building, democratization and societal factors.

      Prior to her role as Editorial Associate with Horn Review, Tinbite worked as a communications consultant at UNESCO IICBA.

      Tinbite made a professional shift towards Ethiopian development policy, with a focus on human movement patterns. Her career interests include GIS aided study of migration patterns of Internally Displaced People (IDPs) to develop effective response mechanisms.

      Bethlehem Mehari

      Director, Editor-in-Chief

      Bethlehem is the Director and Editor-in-Chief at Horn Review. As co-founder, she oversees research and training programs, as well as the editorial process at Horn Review.

      Bethlehem holds a B.A. in Comparative Politics from Furman University and an M.A. in International Economics and Conflict Management from the Johns Hopkins University, School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). Her research interests include intractable and identity-based conflicts, negotiation process and design, as well as climate change and the onset of conflict.

      Prior to her work at Horn Review, Bethlehem worked with the Ethiopian Ministry of Federal Affairs in the design of government approaches to preventing and managing conflict. She also worked with FARM Africa’s Building Resilience and Adaptation Against Climate Extremes and Disasters (BRACED) project in assessing benefits of microfinance institutions in aiding low-income households recover from natural disasters. Most recently, she worked with the Center for Development and Strategy (CDS) as an External Relations Manager, and served as an Admissions Ambassador with the Johns Hopkins University SAIS from 2018 to 2020.
