Ethiopia’s Ruling Political Party, Prosperity Party, Concludes Second Congress, Elects New Leadership
The Prosperity Party has concluded its second congress, which took place from January 31 to February 2, 2025, at the Adwa Victory Memorial Museum in Addis Ababa. The congress focused on electing Central Committee members and setting strategic directions for the party and the country’s domestic and foreign policies. Over 1,700 participants attended, including senior party officials, representatives from competing political parties, community leaders, and delegates from 15 foreign political organizations.
A key outcome of the congress was the election of new party leadership. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed was re-elected as party leader, while Temesgen Tiruneh was chosen as deputy leader, and Adem Mohammed was appointed secretary. These leaders are expected to guide the party’s policies and governance strategies moving forward.
This congress builds upon the foundation laid by the first congress in 2022, where Abiy Ahmed was initially elected as party president. And its outcomes will play a crucial role in shaping Ethiopia’s political landscape, its governance and security priorities, and its diplomacy and regional leadership in the coming years.
