Trump’s Foreign Aid Suspension: A Policy Review

President Donald Trump has initiated a 90-day suspension of all US foreign assistance programs through an executive order, pending a comprehensive review to ensure alignment with his policy goals. This measure, implemented during his return to office, aims to assess whether current foreign aid initiatives serve American interests and align with American values, with Trump stating that current aid efforts destabilize world peace and promote ideas contrary to harmonious relations.

The order gives authority to make determinations on alignment with the President’s policy to a designated official, in consultation with the Office of Management and Budget, while involving the State Department and USAID. The order has created ambiguity on its actual impact, as much of the funding has already been authorized by Congress.
