Airstrikes Against ISIS in Somalia

In a concerted effort to combat ISIS militants in Somalia, the US Africa Command recently conducted airstrikes in the Cal-Miskaad mountains, targeting known hideouts of the group. This operation is part of a broader military campaign authorized by Puntland’s President Said Abdullahi Deni, who has emphasized the necessity of continuing the fight against ISIS, regardless of support from the federal government in Mogadishu.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has also played a crucial role in this initiative, known as “Operation Lightning.” This operation includes providing aerial surveillance and logistical support to local forces engaged in the fight. The recent airstrikes in the Darar-Madoobe area resulted in the death of over 12 ISIS militants, including key leaders, and the destruction of their transport vehicles.

Prior airstrikes conducted by Puntland forces, with UAE assistance, targeted the Xankookib caves, successfully destroying a weapons depot and eliminating several ISIS members. These coordinated efforts highlight the increasing local and international collaboration in counter-terrorism operations in Somalia.

To further enhance effectiveness, it is suggested that Puntland continues to strengthen its intelligence-sharing mechanisms and foster partnerships with international allies to ensure sustained pressure on ISIS.
