Strengthening the AU-UN Partnership: A Path to a Fairer, Prosperous Future for Africa

At the 38th African Union Summit, UN Secretary-General António Guterres highlighted the critical role of strengthening the partnership between the United Nations and the African Union (AU) for a just and prosperous future for Africa. He emphasized Africa’s growing influence in global geopolitics, especially with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), and the importance of addressing historical injustices through reforms such as granting Africa two permanent seats on the UN Security Council.

Guterres also discussed several key regional crises, including the displacement crisis in Sudan, the ongoing violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), terrorism in the Sahel, and Somalia’s security challenges. He called for coordinated international efforts to stop the violence, uphold sovereignty, and support peace and stability in these regions. He also touched upon the ongoing situation in Gaza, advocating for justice and a permanent ceasefire.

A central theme of his speech was the need for a more fair and inclusive international financial architecture that reflects Africa’s interests. Guterres acknowledged that the current system is outdated and does not adequately address the needs of African nations, often limiting their economic development and perpetuating dependency.

He committed to working for reforms that ensure Africa’s stronger representation in global decision-making and support its economic growth. He emphasized that global institutions must act to foster a more equitable financial system, where Africa’s voice is not only heard but fully integrated into the structures that govern international relations.

Guterres concluded by stressing the urgency of a strong AU-UN partnership to ensure Africa’s rightful place in global governance, support its development, and promote peace initiatives.
