AU’s 2025 Theme: A Step Toward Reparatory Justice and Racial Healing

The African Union (AU) has designated 2025 as the “Year of Reparations,” marking a significant milestone in the institutionalization of reparatory justice and racial healing across the continent. This initiative aims to develop a Common African Position on Reparations, establish an African Reparatory Programme of Action, and enhance collaboration with the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the global African diaspora through a Joint Mechanism on Reparations.

These efforts are focused on ensuring that Africans and people of African descent receive justice in ways that are not only symbolic but also tangible and transformative. By pursuing reparations, the AU seeks to address the enduring impact of colonialism and slavery, fostering healing and restoration of dignity for those affected by these historical injustices.

The initiative represents a significant step towards a more equitable future, with the African Union at the forefront of advocating for reparatory justice on the global stage.
