Tanzania, DR Congo Sign Dry Port Construction Deal to Boost Trade
Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have signed an agreement to develop dry ports in both countries, aiming to streamline regional trade and logistics. The agreement, finalized in Lubumbashi, DRC, sets the stage for each nation to allocate land for dry port facilities that will ease congestion at seaports and enhance cargo movement efficiency.
Tanzania’s Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Transport, Godius Kahyarara, noted that cargo volumes destined for the DRC through the Dar es Salaam port have surged by 180 percent over the past four years, underscoring the necessity of improved infrastructure. The agreement is part of a broader bilateral effort to strengthen economic ties and trade facilitation.
Under the deal, Tanzania will develop dry ports in Kasumbalesa, Kasenga, and Kalemie, while the DRC will establish similar facilities in Kwala and Katosho. These locations have been chosen to optimize cargo handling and accelerate regional commerce.
The project will follow a public-private partnership (PPP) model, inviting private investment to ensure modern infrastructure and operational efficiency. Construction is expected to be completed within 18 months, setting a defined timeline for implementation.
This initiative is expected to cut logistics costs, reduce clearance delays, and support businesses engaged in cross-border trade. It also aligns with regional economic integration efforts, such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Both governments have reaffirmed their commitment to the project’s success, emphasizing its role in fostering long-term economic collaboration. Stakeholders will closely monitor its progress and impact on regional trade dynamics.
