U.S. Intensifies Counter-ISIS Operations in Puntland, Somalia
In recent months, the United States has escalated its involvement in Somalia’s Puntland region to combat the Islamic State (ISIS). On February 1, 2025, President Donald Trump authorized airstrikes targeting ISIS positions in the Cal Miskaad Mountains, a remote area in Puntland’s Bari Region. These strikes resulted in the deaths of approximately 46 ISIS fighters, including key figures such as Ahmed Maeleminine, a notable recruiter and financier for the group.
The Puntland Security Forces (PSF) have been actively engaging ISIS militants, reclaiming significant territories and bases. This offensive has been supported by U.S. airstrikes, which have targeted ISIS hideouts and infrastructure.
While the PSF has a history of collaboration with international partners, including receiving training and equipment from the CIA since the early 2000s to combat terrorist groups like al-Shabaab, specific details about the establishment of a new CIA office in Bosaso or the involvement of British and Moroccan intelligence agencies remain unverified by current sources.
The U.S. and Puntland authorities continue to coordinate efforts to dismantle ISIS operations in the region, aiming to enhance security and stability in northeastern Somalia.
