African Union to Provide Platform for Palestinian Leader Amid Divisions Over Israel

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas is set to address the African Union (AU) today, continuing a longstanding tradition of solidarity between the continental body and the Palestinian cause. His speech is expected to include strong criticism of Israel, coming at a time when African nations remain divided on their approach to the conflict.

Despite decades of historical support for Palestine, Africa’s position is increasingly fractured, with some nations strengthening bilateral ties with Israel, particularly in agriculture and defense. However, the AU, rooted in anti-imperialist ideals, has consistently provided a platform for Palestinian representation, reaffirming its symbolic backing of their struggle.

The African Union’s predecessor, the Organization of African Unity (OAU), formally condemned Israeli actions in Lebanon and the occupied Palestinian territories as early as 1975. It pledged unwavering support for the Palestinian people’s efforts to reclaim their land “by any means necessary.”

Today, while the AU remains vocal in its support, its practical influence on the Palestinian issue is limited. The growing economic and diplomatic engagements between Israel and various African states add further complexity to the bloc’s ability to take a unified stance.

Today’s address by President Abbas is expected to highlight these tensions, reinforcing Palestine’s historical ties with Africa while exposing the continent’s modern geopolitical divisions.
