TPLF Urges African Union to Address “Implementation Gaps” in Pretoria Peace Agreement

The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has formally called upon the African Union (AU) to convene urgent discussions addressing delays in the implementation of the 2022 Pretoria peace agreement. TPLF Chairman Debretsion Gebremichael expressed concerns over “concerning situations” related to the agreement’s execution during a meeting with AU officials in Addis Ababa.

The Pretoria Agreement, signed in November 2022, aimed to end the two-year conflict in northern Ethiopia by establishing a permanent cessation of hostilities between the Ethiopian federal government and the TPLF. Key provisions included disarmament, withdrawal of non-federal forces, restoration of services, and the return of displaced persons.

Despite initial progress, including the cessation of hostilities and the resumption of some services, the TPLF has raised concerns about the continued presence of non-federal forces in disputed areas and the slow pace of reintegration efforts. These issues have led to what the TPLF describes as an erosion of trust in the peace process.

In response, the AU has reiterated its commitment to supporting the full implementation of the agreement. A recent AU statement emphasized the importance of adherence to the agreement’s terms to maintain peace and stability in the region.

The TPLF’s call for renewed AU engagement underscores the challenges facing the peace process and the need for sustained international support to address outstanding issues.

The AU has not yet issued a formal response to the TPLF’s latest statement.
