Ethiopian Prime Minister Calls for Public Nominations for Tigray’s Interim Leadership
In an effort to address escalating tensions within the Tigray region, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has invited the public to nominate candidates for the head of Tigray’s interim regional administration. This initiative aims to replace the current interim president, Getachew Reda, amid internal divisions within the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and recent clashes.
In a letter written in Tigrigna and shared on his social media platforms, Prime Minister Abiy emphasized the importance of resolving differences through dialogue to maintain unity among the people of Tigray.
This move follows the establishment of an interim administration in Tigray in March 2023, a key step in implementing a peace plan to end the conflict in the region. While the Prime Minister’s call for public participation aims to promote inclusivity and stability, some within the TPLF view it as a violation of the cessation of hostilities agreement. Concerns remain that changes in leadership may not fully address the underlying political instability in Tigray and could potentially lead to renewed tensions with the federal government.
