Berbera Expands Seafood Trade as Ethiopia’s Demand for Fish Rises
Berbera, Somaliland’s key port on the Gulf of Aden, is rapidly growing its seafood industry to meet increasing demand in the region, particularly from Ethiopia. With a population of over 120 million, Ethiopia is seeing a shift toward protein-rich diets, making fish a more prominent part of local consumption patterns.
One of the companies driving this expansion is Somtuna Fishing Company, part of the Dahabshil Group, which has scaled up tuna production and exports. Its product, Berbera Tuna Fish, is now stocked in Ethiopian supermarkets, signaling stronger trade ties between the two economies. Berbera’s strategic location, established trade routes, and logistical improvements are supporting this growth.
The recently upgraded Berbera port, along with the development of the Berbera Corridor highway linking Somaliland to Ethiopia, is expected to boost trade flows. With further investment in sustainable fishing and modern processing facilities, Berbera is poised to become a leading seafood supplier in the Horn of Africa and beyond.
