Growing Strategic Alignment Between Eritrea and Iran: A Threat to Israel?

Eritrea’s growing relationship with Iran, particularly its role in disrupting maritime routes in the Red Sea and allowing Iranian vessels to use its waters, has become a security concern for Israel and its allies, including Azerbaijan. Eritrea’s anti-Israel stance, evident in its votes against Israel at the UN, opposition to Israeli presence in the African Union, and alignment with groups like the Houthis, further strains its relations with Israel.

While it is not certain that Israel will take direct action against Eritrea, the growing alliance with Iran and its role in the Yemen conflict could make Eritrea a target if Israel perceives it as enabling Iranian influence in ways that threaten Israeli security. However, Israel typically focuses on more immediate threats from groups like Hezbollah or Hamas, which are directly involved in hostilities with Israel. Targeting Eritrea would require broader regional considerations, as this could provoke a wider conflict with Iran. Therefore, Israel would likely be cautious and instead prioritize strengthening diplomatic and security ties with neighboring countries like Ethiopia and Somaliland.

Reflection:

This situation underscores the complexities of geopolitical alliances, where shared strategic interests often overshadow moral considerations. Eritrea’s partnership with Iran, driven by necessity rather than ideology, risks deepening regional instability. For Israel and its allies, particularly the U.S., this underscores the importance of engaging more effectively with regional powers to address the underlying political dynamics fueling these alliances, rather than focusing solely on individual countries.
