French President Emmanuel Macron recently completed a significant visit to Ethiopia and Djibouti, aimed at reinforcing the long-standing relationships between France and these key nations in the Horn of Africa. The visit underscored shared cultural and economic interests while reflecting France’s commitment to collaborative development efforts.  

Macron’s visit to Ethiopia highlighted the deep historical ties between the two nations. Known as the cradle of humanity, Ethiopia holds immense cultural and historical significance, which France has actively supported through collaborative projects.  

One of the focal points of the visit was Lalibela, a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its 13th-century rock-hewn churches. France has played a pivotal role in the preservation of these historic structures, with restoration efforts nearing completion. Macron also emphasized France’s involvement in renovating Ethiopia’s National Palace, a symbol of the country’s heritage, now restored to its former glory.  

On the economic front, Macron reaffirmed France’s support for Ethiopia’s modernization efforts. He expressed confidence in the country’s future and its progress in implementing transformative reforms.  

In Djibouti, Macron celebrated the enduring partnership between the two nations, rooted in history and strategic collaboration. Djibouti hosts the largest French military base in Africa, underscoring its importance in regional cooperation.  

During his visit, Macron met with President Ismaïl Omar Guelleh, highlighting the strong ties between their countries. He expressed gratitude for Djibouti’s hospitality and praised the cooperation between the French and Djiboutian armed forces, which serves as a symbol of mutual trust and shared objectives.  

Macron’s tour was not just a reflection on past achievements but also a vision for future collaboration. By strengthening cultural ties, supporting economic reforms, and fostering mutual development, France aims to solidify its role as a trusted partner in East Africa.  

This visit reaffirmed France’s commitment to balanced and respectful partnerships, ensuring mutual benefits while contributing to the prosperity of the region.
