Turkey Deports 300 Eritreans Despite UN Warnings

The Turkish government has forcibly deported 300 Eritrean migrants, defying warnings from UN human rights experts about severe risks, including torture and indefinite military conscription. In a letter dated October 16, 2024, three UN rapporteurs condemned the deportations as violations of international law, including the Convention Against Torture.

The deportees reportedly face detention or forced conscription upon return to Eritrea, where conditions are linked to forced labor and inhumane treatment. The letter also raised alarms over harsh conditions at Turkey’s Aydın Repatriation Center, urging Turkey to halt deportations and improve detention standards.

UN experts are calling for immediate action to protect the remaining detainees and uphold asylum rights.
