Erdogan to Visit Ethiopia and Somalia in Early 2025 Following Ankara Declaration
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced plans to visit Ethiopia and Somalia in early 2025 after facilitating the Ankara Declaration signed on December 11, 2024, between Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
The declaration reaffirms the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of both Ethiopia and Somalia while addressing Ethiopia’s strategic bid for assured access to the sea. Technical negotiations to finalize the details of this arrangement are set to begin in February 2025 and conclude within four months.
Turkey has played a key role in fostering dialogue, with the agreement being welcomed by the African Union, the US, and the UK. The declaration marks an important step toward strengthening cooperation and stability in the Horn of Africa.
