Trial Power Supply Marks Milestone in East Africa Electric Highway Project

The East Africa Electric Highway project, a key component of the power infrastructure initiative connecting Ethiopia, Kenya, and Tanzania, has reached a significant milestone with the commencement of trial power supply from Kenya to Tanzania. This follows the successful establishment of the first power connection between Ethiopia and Kenya, enabled by an advanced power supply network. The completion of the Kenya-Tanzania phase now facilitates trial power distribution between the two nations.

This regional power integration aims to enhance cooperation among Ethiopia, Kenya, and Tanzania by providing a consistent and cost-effective power supply. It will also expand Ethiopia’s capacity to supply renewable energy, positioning the country as a leader in green electricity trading in East Africa. Initial energy trading efforts are projected to generate approximately USD 200 million annually, further boosting economic prospects for the region.

The East Africa Electric Highway project promotes energy access, regional stability, and economic growth while supporting renewable energy initiatives. Backed by the World Bank, the African Development Bank, and the Agence Française de Développement (AFD), this initiative underscores a commitment to sustainable development and regional energy cooperation in East Africa.
