Uganda and Ethiopia Strengthen Defense Ties with Key Military Cooperation Agreement

Uganda and Ethiopia have taken significant steps to strengthen their defense ties, formalizing an agreement to enhance cooperation in key military sectors, including the defense industry, joint training initiatives, and information exchange. The pact was signed following discussions between the Chief of Staff of the Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF), Field Marshal Berhanu Jula, and the Commander of the Ugandan People’s Defense Forces (UPDF), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

During the meeting, General Kainerugaba expressed gratitude for the warm hospitality extended by Ethiopia, referring to the country as his “ancestral home” and reaffirming the unbreakable bond between Uganda and Ethiopia. He emphasized Uganda’s commitment to deepening its collaboration with Ethiopia, noting the shared goal of enhancing regional security and military capabilities.

Field Marshal Berhanu Jula welcomed the partnership, underscoring the importance of a united approach to addressing common security challenges in East Africa. Both leaders highlighted the need for a stronger focus on regional stability through improved military readiness and cooperation.

Additionally, Uganda’s Deputy Chief of the Defense Forces, Lt. Gen. Sam Okiding, recently led a delegation to explore the Ethiopian Air Force’s capabilities, touring facilities such as the Heavy Maintenance Center and the Air Force Academy Flight School. This engagement reflects the broader initiative to enhance military ties following the high-level agreement.

This collaboration is seen as a strategic move to bolster regional security and operational effectiveness, further solidifying the historic ties between the two nations.
