AU Chairperson Moussa Faki: Global Conflicts Are Deeply Impacting Africa

At the 38th African Union (AU) Summit, AU Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki underscored the profound effects of global conflicts on Africa, particularly the Russia-Ukraine war and the Palestinian crisis.

Africa Caught in Global Tensions

Faki emphasized that the Russia-Ukraine war has severely disrupted Africa, particularly in food imports, reviving what he called “the outdated Cold War in incognito.” He warned that hegemonic struggles far from Africa’s borders are dragging the continent into proxy conflicts, threatening stability and economic progress.

Firm Support for Palestine

On the crisis in Palestine, Faki condemned what he described as “one of the worst injustices in the history of mankind,” reaffirming that the AU stands firmly with the Palestinian people. He criticized the “total silence of the world’s powers,” except for a few who interpret the conflict through their own historical experiences.

Regional Challenges & African Solutions

Faki also highlighted growing tensions in the Horn of Africa, stressing the urgent need for African-led solutions to prevent external powers from exploiting regional vulnerabilities.

Additionally, he reaffirmed the AU’s commitment to Agenda 2063, emphasizing key priorities such as gender equality, education, food security, and health security—critical areas for ensuring Africa’s sustainable development.

As the AU Summit progresses, leaders will focus on conflict resolution, economic resilience, and strengthening Africa’s position in global geopolitics.
