African Union Decries Intensifying Violence in Sudan, Urges Immediate Ceasefire and Humanitarian Access

Addis Ababa, 14 April 2025 – The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has voiced grave concern over the escalating hostilities in Sudan, particularly in and around El Fasher, North Darfur. In a strongly worded statement issued from the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, the Chairperson condemned the latest wave of violence, which includes credible reports of targeted attacks on displaced persons in the Zamzam and Abu Shouk camps, resulting in the deaths of civilians, including children and humanitarian personnel.

Describing the attacks as an egregious violation of international humanitarian and human rights law, the AU extended its heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and the people of Sudan. The Commission reiterated its firm call for an immediate and unconditional cessation of hostilities and demanded the lifting of the siege on El Fasher to facilitate unfettered humanitarian access.

Recalling the AU Peace and Security Council’s earlier communiqués [PSC/PR/COMM. 1179 (2023)] and [PSC/PR/COMM. 1191 (2024)], the statement emphasized the urgent need for de-escalation and the protection of civilians. The Chairperson urged all actors to exercise maximum restraint and refrain from any actions that could further inflame tensions.

Underscoring the primacy of a Sudanese-led resolution, the AU called on all stakeholders to demonstrate genuine political will by committing to a durable ceasefire and engaging in an inclusive and comprehensive political process.

The African Union reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to working alongside Sudanese stakeholders, regional partners, and the broader international community to restore peace, safeguard human life, and promote democratic governance in Sudan.
