Somalia’s Rejection of Gaza Displacement Plans

Somalia has categorically rejected any proposals to displace Palestinians from Gaza to its territory, amid reports that some autonomous regions were open to accepting refugees. A source from Somalia’s foreign ministry emphasized that the nation would not engage in “displacement policies” allegedly orchestrated by Washington, dismissing such claims as based on “leaks and rumors.”

This stance follows statements from Israel’s Consul General suggesting potential relocation sites, including Puntland and Somaliland. While Puntland’s Deputy Minister indicated a willingness to accept Gazans voluntarily, federal officials have distanced themselves from these assertions, reinforcing the government’s unified rejection of any forced displacement.

Legal researcher Abdirahman Keelo criticized the notion of forced relocation as a violation of international humanitarian law, labelling the reports as unrealistic. He pointed out that Somalia’s regions lack the resources to support an influx of refugees, highlighting the implications for regional stability and humanitarian obligations.
